There is no doubt that the internet has made the world a much smaller place. We are all connected in ways that had never been thought of before and we can make friends from one end of the world to the other. One way the internet has brought us together is by gaming. It is now possible to play online games with others from around the world without having ever met any of these other individuals before.
Thanks to the internet and in particular, broadband internet, gaming is more popular now than it ever has been before. It used to be that the only way you could play a video game on your television set was by hooking it up to a Nintendo or similar product. When you did so, you usually played against the computer or one other person. However, you can now use your television or computer as a window to the world and play online with hundreds of other people.
The online gaming market has exploded in recent years and is now worth $ 15 billion dollars. In fact, approximately twenty million players have spent seventeen billion hours on Xbox live, alone. That breaks down to more than two hours for every single person on the planet. There are more than forty million people who have registered with PlayStation accounts as well. The online gaming market is also surprisingly divided among the genders with 58% male players compared to 42% female players. The income for online gaming is also surprising with the majority of players bringing home between $ 35,000 and $ 75,000 per year. As might be expected, the majority of online gamers tends to be a little younger with most players between the ages of 25 and 44. It is somewhat surprising that there are not more players in their upper teens, but that may be because these gamers are still living at home and their playing time might be limited.
If gamers choose to play on their personal computers, then the most popular games are World of Warcraft followed by Runescape and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The most popular games for Xbox are Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Those who choose to play on a device such as an Xbox will participate in gaming an average of 7.3 hours per week. Those who play on their computer are not far behind averaging 6.6 hours per week and those who play on a PlayStation average 5.8 hours a week gaming.
Most players tend to go for the fantasy games. In fact, an overwhelming majority of 92% of players prefer these types of games. Almost 4% prefer sci-fi or superhero type games while almost 2% like social or puzzle games. Just under 1% of gamers like combat simulations the best.
Without the internet, there would be no way for many of these games to exist in the form that they do now with people taking on other identities and fully engaging in a fantasy world to play a game.
